Gaming Limitations – Global Gaming Expo

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:11 am

The fifth Global Gaming Expo being held at The Venetian in Macau from today until Thursday and has presented some interesting conclusionss

Whilst Visa restrictions have further been loosened allowing more travel to Macau, however there are firm limits in place on the size of the casino industry which may limit growth.

The former Portuguese enclave has a limit of 5,500 gaming tables until 2013 and, thereafter, growth will be restricted to 3-5 percent a year.

Macau Gaming hurting Las Vegas even..

Every knows that Macau Gaming has been on the increase.

The surprise is just how big the increase is – 42% year on year

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)–Macau’s November gambling revenue surged 42% from a year earlier to its second-highest monthly total, exceeding analysts’ expectations despite falling short of the record high set just one month prior.

November revenue totaled MOP17.35 billion (US$2.2 billion), up sharply from MOP12.22 billion a year earlier but 8.1% below October’s MOP18.87 billion, according to data from Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

Analysts said the amount came as a surprise, because market participants had expected revenue to fall back to around MOP15 billion-MOP16 billion after October’s record-breaking number, J.P. Morgan analyst Kenneth Fong said in a research note.

Macau’s October gambling revenue surged 50% from a year earlier, setting an all-time monthly high and exceeding analysts’ expectations as patronage climbed during the week-long Chinese National Day holiday at the beginning of the month. An extra weekend in October also boosted gambling revenue that month. There were five weekends in October.

November’s total was 9% above CLSA’s forecast made after the first 21 days of the month. “Gaming activity picked up later in the month after the Grand Prix weekend,” CLSA analyst Huei Suen Ng said in a note to clients. The Grand Prix was held in Macau Nov. 17-20. She added Macau gambling revenue for 2010 was likely to rise 56% over 2009 based on the current run rate versus the house’s forecast for a 50% rise.

The November figure also exceeded Wells Fargo’s original 29% year-on-year growth estimate. November’s slowdown compared with the previous month was in line with the average sequential dips in November 2008 and 2009, Wells Fargo analyst Carlo Santarelli said.

Macau’s gambling revenue in the January-November period rose 57% from a year earlier to MOP169.46 billion.

Baby Pushchairs Chinese Style

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:31 am

Are the cultures of china , outlying states such as Macau and the west narrowing?

At a physical level Certainly the more affluent parts of chinese cities are starting to look like the west.

Fascinating to see an image of a pushchair chinese style

I have never seen baby pushchairs like this in the west – which have a very stereotyped view of such things – the east altogether a more colourful place.

Hard Rock Hotel and Epiphone Guitars

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:38 pm

Just one year on, and I wonder what Macau makes of the Hard Rock hotel?

In a publicity splash it donated eight epiphone les paul guitars to local universites – see here:

“City of Dreams today announced that 8 Epiphone guitars were donated to 8 educational and youth groups in Macau on Saturday July 4, 2009. City of Dreams is an integrated entertainment resort set to become the “must experience” destination in Macau”

Will these guitars be used by budding stars of the future?
Will the Hardrock itself create a culture?

I have to admit, my own recent visit to the Hard Rock was unimpressive, albeit a different city.
The only hotel with NO coffee maker, and yet no WIFI in the public areas, so as a business traveller, where are you meant to work?

But for all that the classic collections of electric guitars and memorabilia are themselves worth a visit for those with any interest in rock music of bygone times

Printing and commercial activity in Macau

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:44 am

A1 Printing Company asked me what the situation was regarding commercial activity and printing in Macau.

I found this link on the Government Printing Bureau Website which starts:
This English translation of the Commercial Code of Macao was undertaken upon the initiative of the Government of the Special Administrative Region of Macao, and is the first of a major Code in the Macao SAR.

The translation has been made on the basis of the Portuguese version of the Commercial Code. Although this is not an ideal situation, given that the legal system of Macao is bilingual Chinese and Portuguese, there can be confidence in its accuracy as the Code was mostly prepared by Portuguese-speaking jurists. The Code itself is, of course, a product of the Portuguese strand of the civil law, continental or Roman-German family of legal systems.”

It seems to apply to printing companies – Does anyone know if that is still valid?

Embora a actualização salarial tenha ficado ‘preto no branco’, ainda faltam acertar alguns pormenores.

Edmund Ho quer sociedade “aberta e tolerante”

Governo recebeu projecto MGM/Pansy Ho
